Book Signing at Shuler Books in Ann Arbor Michigan!

What a great author visit on Friday afternoon at Emerson Middle School. I was also guest author at their book fair held Sunday night at Shuler’s Books in Ann Arbor. The kids had a ton of great questions during my visit at the Q&A follow up after I read from my YA Thriller novel, Welcome To Nightjar, and there was excitement when I announced the winner of the 25 Words or Less Flash Fiction Contest.

So many great entries, but I could only choose one winner. The talented winner received a big Michigan themed prize bag full of Michigan-made goodies, as well as gift certificates to local bookstores. I really enjoyed hearing from parents, teachers, and of course, the kids about their favorite parts of my book, and I so appreciate the warm welcome I was given from everyone at both Emerson Middle School and the staff at Shulers Books in Ann Arbor.

If you haven't started shopping for the holidays yet, you can pick up a copy of my book at Fine Print Books in Saline as well! Both Fine Print Books in Saline and Shulers Books in Ann Arbor are great local bookstores run by fabulous people.

Finnish Writing & Art Residency at the Arteles Creative Center!

I was thrilled to be accepted as a Writer & Artist-In-Residence for the month of October at the Arteles Creative Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland. A non-profit and one of the largest international artist residency centers in Northern Europe, Arteles and also organizes cultural events and activities.
Offering themed residencies to 12-14 creatives each month, Arteles invited me to be a part of Fall Into Focus, for writers, researchers and creatives.

There were fourteen other residents, split between the blue and yellow turn of the century wooden houses at Arteles, from Brazil, Austria, Belgium, Scotland, Australia, Iran and Pakistan, as well as several others from various parts of the USA. It was a lot of fun to see what everyone was working on. We had a painter, a drummer, a rock-climbing motivational writer, a documentary film-maker, a ceramicist-painter, an earth-collector-performance artist among the group, and every other day we got to enjoy a traditional wood burning sauna.

October meant walks in the Finnish forests, collecting chanterelles and other edible mushrooms, and berries such as sea buckthorn, lingonberry and currants.

I also had an opportunity to spend time in Rovaniemi in Lapland, in the Arctic Circle. It was a trip that sparked a lot of creativity, and during my time there I finished my second YA Suspense novel, and began work on a third. I was also able to work on character sketches for a planned graphic children’s novel.

If you are looking for a place to find peace and quiet to create, I can’t say enough great things about the Arteles Creative Center in Hämeenkyrö, Finland, as well as Finland in general. Often overlooked by the more well-known Nordic neighbors, Finland is a treat not to be missed.

Be Well,

Jenn

Bear River Writers Conference on the shores of Walloon Lake

I was thrilled to be a part of the Bear River Writers Conference over Labor Day weekend in northern Michigan on the shores of Walloon Lake, with workshops led by UMICH LSA faculty. As aYA thriller and suspense fiction writer, the walk back to my cabin in the dark quickly put me in the shoes of one of my characters.

A big shout out to Cody Walker, Polly Rosenwaike and Julie Buntin for their words of encouragement.

Llamas, Alpacas and Cuy Oh My!

I suppose it’s cliche to say my art is inspired by my travels, but it’s really true. On a family trip to Peru, I was enamored of all the Llama’s, Alpaca’s, colors and flavors we encountered.
